SUMMARY:Men's Winter Clothing Drive
DESCRIPTION:People with brain injury are 2.5x more likely to be incarcerated. When individuals transition from prison back to the community\, they are released with the clothing and items they entered with. \n\n\n\nMarcus has a history of multiple traumatic brain injuries\, starting in an abusive home in childhood and most recently a brain injury from a physical altercation. He never received support for his brain injury. Marcus is impulsive\, sensitive to light and noise\, has trouble remembering meeting times\, and gets stuck when he tries to plan ahead. Since he became an adult\, Marcus has been in and out of prison. \n\n\n\nMarcus received a 6-month sentence. When he entered prison\, he was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. When he was released in the winter\, he was wearing shorts and a t-shirt carrying his items in a trash bag. Marcus wants to make a positive change in his life\, but he needs his basic needs met to do so. \n\n\n\nWe need fresh starts\, not frosty starts\, if we are serious about reducing crime rates in our community and supporting people who are reintegrating. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBrainTrust is collecting new and gently used winter clothing\, work clothing\, and backpacks\, as well as personal hygiene items to distribute to men being released to Kelowna and surrounding area from the Oliver Correctional Centre. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nItems needed: \n\n\n\nMen’s clothing items size L-4XLWinter coats\, track pants\, sweatshirts\, t-shirtsWinter boots & running shoesSocks and underwearGloves & hatsBackpacksToothbrush & toothpasteDeodorantComb or hairbrush\n\n\n\nYou can help us bring support exactly where it’s needed. Donations can be dropped off at the BrainTrust office throughout the month of November. In December\, BrainTrust will be bringing the donated items to the Oliver Correctional Centre. Staff there will distribute the items to people who are reintegrating into the community. \n\n\n\nItems can be dropped off at the BrainTrust office in downtown Kelowna: \n\n\n\nMonday: 10-3Tuesday: 9-3Wednesday: 9-3Thursday: 9-3Friday: 9-3\n\n\n\nPlease ring the doorbell when you arrive and a staff member will assist you. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, please contact Mitchell Kolybaba at mkolybaba@braintrustcanada.com

SUMMARY:2022 Pushor Mitchell LLP West Coast Brain Injury Conference
DESCRIPTION:Pushor Mitchell LLP West Coast Brain Injury Conference \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n The Pushor Mitchell LLP West Coast Brain Injury Conference (WCBIC) 2022 will bring together leading minds and change-makers in the field of brain injury research for a full day of learning and discourse.   \nAs an attendee\, sponsor\, or exhibitor\, you will be joining us on our mission towards targeting the root of chronic social and systemic issues as we strive to shift away from the “one practice fits all” mandate. In line with this year’s conference theme “Changing the Narrative on Brain Injury”\, our focus is on synergistic therapeutic interventions in the context of Trauma-Informed Practice\, and with the integration of First Nations perspectives. \nWe hope that you will join us for this very important and innovative community event. Together\, we believe we can make this community safer and more inclusive for all. \n \n \n \n Changing the Narrative on Brain Injury\n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n	\n \n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Program\n An overview of the conference schedule\, the incredible speakers\, exhibitors\, our generous sponsors and much more! \n Download PDF\n \n \n \n \n \n Sponsorship & Exhibition\n Interested in becoming a sponsor or exhibitor for WCBIC 2022? \n Download PDF\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n Venue\n University of BC Okanagan Campus\n Kelowna\, BC \nAddress:\nEngineering\, Management\, and Education (EME) Building\nUniversity of British Columbia – Okanagan Campus\n1137 Alumni Avenue\nKelowna\, BC  V1V 1V7 \n Map\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n	\n \n\n\n\n \n Our Speakers\n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n Keynote\n Dr. Kim Gorgens\n Professor\, University of Denver \nThe Colorado Brain Injury Model: Lessons from the US about Brain Injuries in Criminal Justice \nThis presentation will highlight data on brain injury history and related psychosocial vulnerabilities from adult and youth correctional\, court and treatment facilities in Colorado. This presentation will also highlight a novel model (the Colorado Brain Injury Model) that is designed to identify brain injury history\, assess cognitive functioning and these psychosocial vulnerabilities\, and to make recommendations and referrals that support the individual through (and out of) the system. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n	\n \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ian Cull\n Former Senior Advisor on Indigenous Affairs – University of British Columbia\, Okanagan\n \n Changing the Narrative on Brain Injury: Using the TRC Calls to Action as a Path Forward \nThe Truth and Reconciliation Report has made several recommendations concerning the delivery of health care to Indigenous people. It’s my intention to identify how the calls to action can be acknowledged and used to change the narratives and approaches to the delivery of care for Indigenous people living with brain injury. \nI will outline the importance of not only acknowledging the truth\, but also understanding what that means in terms of relationship with Indigenous peoples as the crucial first step. Next I will talk about some strategies that can be useful to promote good relationships with Indigenous clients. It is my hope that participants will come away with a fuller understanding of the historical traumas and intergenerational traumas Indigenous people have experienced with health care and an openness to anticipating these considerations and using trauma informed interventions in their practice. \n \n \n \n Read More\n \n \n \n \n Lori Kline\n Caregiver\n \n Traumas and Triumphs: My Experience as a Caregiver \nMy talk will be about the traumas and triumphs of my personal journey as a loving Caregiver of a young woman living with brain injury. I will also address the ripple effects of brain injury on the entire family. \nI respectfully acknowledge that this is only one family’s experience. Therefore\, my desired take-aways are as varied as the group of attendees: \n\nFor fellow caregivers – to feel completely understood and acknowledged\, with no judgement whatsoever\nFor people living with brain injury – to feel completely loved\, supported\, acknowledged\, and admired\nFor loved ones of people living with brain injury – to feel inspired to keep loving and to keep learning\nFor friends and acquaintances of people living with brain injury – to resolve to be present for\, and available to\, the individual and his/her family\nFor all health professionals involved – to acknowledge that love and hope pair well with science\n\n \n \n \n Read More\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bryan Fitzpatrick\n Lawyer & Partner – Pushor Mitchell LLP\, Kelowna\, BC\n \n Advocating for Yourself in a “No-Fault” World \nIn this talk\, I will share my experience as a criminal lawyer to provide insight on how persons with brain injury can advocate for themselves in today’s “no fault” insurance world\, including how to navigate a Civil Rights Tribunal to resolve a personal injury claim. \n \n \n \n Read More\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Maya Libben\n Associate Professor & Clinical Psychologist – University of British Columbia\, Okanagan\n \n Psychological Treatment for Brain Injury: Current Approaches and Future Growth \nPsychological impacts\, including anxiety\, depression and post-traumatic stress are common following a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Psychological treatment is a critical component of TBI rehabilitation and plays a significant role in improving clinical outcomes. In this talk I will discuss the links between TBI and emotional function and will review empirically supported treatments that specifically address the unique barriers faced by those who have suffered a TBI. Finally\, I will discuss new and cutting-edge psychological approaches for TBI treatment and will discuss how these can be used by health-professionals\, clients and care-givers to improve overall function. \n \n \n \n Read More\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Zach Walsh\n Professor & Registered Psychologist – University of British Columbia\, Okanagan\n \n Cannabis\, Substance Use\, and Public Health\nThis talk will review the research on how cannabis can be used in the context of harm reduction as a substitute for other potentially more dangerous substances. We will examine how cannabis substitution may have an overall positive impact on public health\, with a particular focus on issues of relevance to individuals living with acquired brain injury\, their loved ones\, and their caregivers. \n \n \n \n Read More\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Sheila Cote-Meek\n Vice-President Equity\, People & Culture – York University\, Toronto\, ON\n \n Considerations for Decolonizing the Healthcare System: An Indigenous Perspective \nThe mission of this conference\, Changing the Narrative on Brain Injury\, is to dialogue on how we can shift away from models that focus on ‘one size fits all’ approaches and to enrich understandings of alternative models and practices. This presentation starts with recognizing how the health care system remains deeply rooted in colonial practices which has resulted in extreme health inequities for Indigenous peoples. This is followed by exploring how we can do better and work towards decolonization. \n \n \n \n Read More\n \n \n \n	\n \n\n\n\n \n Our Sponsors\n \n \n\n\n\n \n Title Sponsor\n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n \n \n About the Area\n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n >\n \n \n \n \n \n Okanagan\n WCBIC 2022 is hosted in the city of Kelowna – the gateway to the stunning Okanagan Valley.
