Concussion in Children and Youth

The Importance of Specialized Treatment

  • Injury to the developing brain, especially repeat concussions, can increase the risk of long-term effects in children and youth.  Concussion management experts worldwide agree that the developing brain requires special consideration.

  • Research shows that children and youth can take longer to recover from a concussion than adults suffering comparable impacts.

  • Children and youth sustaining concussion must be strictly monitored and their activities managed carefully until they are fully healed.  Eager to play again, and unable to see the possible long-term effects, youth may downplay their symptoms.  Medical clearance on the return to normal activities is essential.

  • Children and youth who sustain one concussion are at higher risk for a second concussion from re-injury soon after the first one.  The best way to achieve a safe recovery is with the guidance and support of brain injury specialists.

  • Children and youth who suffer a second or third concussion take much longer to recover. If another brain injury is sustained before the youth has recovered from the initial concussion, s/he may be left with long-term deficits impacting memory, balance, sleep, and mood, and can result in chronic headaches.

Concussions 101: A Primer for Kids and Parents

In this engaging, short video Dr. Mike Evans describes:

  • what a concussion is,
  • concussion symptoms that can occur,
  • steps that are followed for the safe return to activity,
  • and the importance of communication throughout the healing process.

The Research is Clear

Concussion is a brain injury that requires specific treatment for full recovery.

Concussion recovery and appropriate return to activity is crucial, particularly in children and youth.

Proper concussion recovery is the best way to prevent long-term consequences.
